U.S. House of Representative, HI

Charles Kong Djou, born 1970 in Los Angeles, was the Congressman from Hawaii’s 1st congressional district. He won the special, mail-in election on May 22, 2010, and became the first Republican to represent the district in 20 years. He took the oath of office May 25, 2010. Unfortunately, he lost the election in November.

He was in his second term on the Honolulu City Council when he ran for Congress, where he represented District 4 (Waikiki to Hawaii Kai). He served on the City Council as the Chairman of the Executive Matters & Legal Affairs Committee, Vice Chair of the Planning Committee and as a member of the Transportation and Public Safety & Services committees. He was first elected to his seat in 2002, and was re-elected in 2006. He previously served one term in the Hawaii House of Representatives from 2000 to 2002 and was the Minority Floor Leader.

Djou is married to Stacey Kawasaki Djou, a Japanese-American. They have three children. His surname “Djou” is a French transcription of his Chinese surname “Zhou” (周).

This is the third year this book is published.

The main purpose of this book is to encourage Chinese-Americans to actively participate in politics. We are not asking you to run for office, but we insist that you be a responsible citizen and register to vote AND actually go out to vote. One vote can make the difference. John Tran, Mayor of Rosemead, lost his election by just one vote.

This is a list of current Chinese-American Elected Officials. Some of them are not elected, such as cabinet members and ambassadors. School and Water District board members are elected but not included in this list. Some are not current elected officials, but they are included because they have played a significant part in Asian American politics.

Most information is from each elected official’s own biography and/or Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia. Chinese information is from my personal research and/or with my friends’ help. This project has taken me two years, but it has been my pride and joy. Please feel free to use this information with the appropriate sources.

The author is thankful to the following members of different lodges of Chinese American Citizens Alliance. They are Virginia Gee, Stephen Ying, Edward Yu, Benson Lee, Alex Chan, Dr. Toon Lee, Al Soohoo and Dr. Bill Chun-Hoon. A big “Thanks” to Ambrose Leong.

New information is welcome, please email to: PedroChan@aol.com.

PedroChan@aol.com.

Bush nominated Chao to be Deputy Secretary of Transportation, the number two position in the department. From 1991 to 1992, Chao was Director of the Peace Corps. She expanded the Peace Corps’s presence in Eastern Europe and Central Asia by establishing the first Peace Corps programs in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, and other newly independent states of the former Soviet Union.
